Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, may no longer be winning Grade A trophies but his perspective on football is worth a prize. In August 2016, a year ago that is, he predicted that a player would soon be sold for £200 million. I thought it was crazy.
But PSG, the French team owned by Qataris, has just paid that sum to snatch Neymar from Barcelona of Spain — and I am wondering who is crazy now. For a player who is not even the best in Spain much less in Europe, I think the football world has fully gone bananas. And when Neymar said he didn’t change clubs because of the money, I chuckled. I presume a wage of £515,000 per week (after tax) isn’t bad.
